UNLOCKING THE POWER OF POSITIVE AFFIRMATIONS: Why They Work, and What To Do When They Don’t

We have all heard of affirmations before, and we have likely been encouraged at some point to use them. Affirmations are like mental vitamins for our minds. These positive statements that we say on repeat to either combat low moods, self-sabotaging behavior, or just an overall negative experience, can help to rewire how we see and think about those types of situations.
Think of it as vitamin C for the mind and soul, it gives you a boost (even if for a short time) and can remind you of your potential.

THE POWER THEY HAVE

Affirmations act as a form of positive reinforcement. Their purpose is to encourage you and foster self-confidence. Even the “most confident person” is not always confident, right?
By using affirmations, you push yourself to counteract any negative talk you have towards yourself, there is a healthy moment of focus and clarity (which can enhance motivation) and hopefully push you towards achieving your dreams. By using them, you can create a magical mindset shift, promoting your resilient outlook on the life that you have.

WHAT ABOUT WHEN THEY DO NOT WORK?

Well first, nothing works as it should ALL the time! But here are some things you can consider if you are using affirmations and do not find yourself encouraged.

  1. You don’t have a desire to believe the affirmations. It is true that if you say something enough, you may start to believe it, so yes, at times you don’t believe them at first, but over time, you will. But for those times where it seems no matter how many times you say, “I am beautiful and I am kind”, you just argue with it. Ask yourself. “Am I ready to be beautiful? Am I ready to be kind, is that what I want, or is that what I think others want for me?” because if it is not what YOU want, why would you believe it?!

  2. You practice the art of affirmations passively. The key ingredient to affirmations, after saying them, is to accompany it with action steps. Saying it without action does not bring it to fruition

  3. You are resistant to change. Like #2, you don’t have the desire. Or subconsciously you resist positive change because of the work it will come with. It would be important for you to explore that resistance, as this would hinder any progress.

Just like vitamins, incorporating affirmations daily can be a powerful tool to enhance the person that you are. Sure, you could go without them, but if you are looking to maximize your journey and growth process, engage in meaningful affirmations. Back those affirmations by honest desire, exploration of belief, and actions toward desired outcomes.
With dedication and consistency, it truly can help to transform your life!
